Setting Up a Static IP for Printer

This page will help you set up a static IP address for a printer. All printers are different, but most of the process is the same, so long as you can find the equivalent screen on your device. If you are having trouble figuring out your printer, consult your manual or call technical support for the brand of the printer. The following process is for an HP P2055 printer.

The first thing you want to do is go to the printer and find the control panel. Click on Menu until the Configuration menu appears. Within this menu, you will find an option to Configure Network. Once highlighted, use the arrow key to choose Yes. This will allow you to access the configuration submenu.

There are a few things you want to check in this menu. First, find the DHCP option. Make sure that it is set to No. If DHCP is turned on, the printer will automatically pick up an IP address. Next, find the Configure TCP/IP option. Change this option to Yes. Generally, network addresses are the same on a network except for the last group of numbers. For example, the network at our office always begins with 192.168.1.???. The ??? is the number given to each individual device. When entering an IP for the printer, make sure no other device is using the IP entered. Make sure to write down all network IP addresses to avoid conflicts and duplicates. Once the IP is set on the printer, you can test it by trying to print from a computer. If the printer doesn't respond, make sure the IP is not shared by another device. If it isn't and the printer still isn't responding, contact HP technical support or the manual that came with the printer for more information.
